Strawberry tree raw honey is a typical product of Sardinia. Some says that it is also among the most ancient products of the Sardinian cuisine. Moreover, it is one of the most difficult to find product all over the world, due to its extraordinary properties.
Here in Italy, we have many products that have beneficial properties for human health, in particular honeys, and especially Strawberry tree raw honey: rare, healthy, beneficial, and thus expensive.
The strawberry tree is a slow growth evergreen shrub, it belongs to the Ericacee family, and only in favorable and repaired areas it is able to reach from 6 to 10 meters (10 to 32 ft) of height. Although, due to fires and deforestation, it’s rare to find one higher than 2.5 meters (8 ft).
Going back in the history, it is said that Ancient Romans gave name to this beautiful and particular plant: Arutus unedo. Virgil, inside its Georgics, was used to call it arbutus. While, Pliny the Elder, call as unum edo, which means “I eat only one“, simply to say how much unpleasant (bitter) was the strawberry tree fruit.
